NIGHT MANAGER (Part-Time)

The Ark, Michigan’s renowned nonprofit music venue, is seeking an enthusiastic, capable Night Manager to work 1-2 nights per week (5-12 hours). The Night Manager represents Ark management at the venue during performances by providing excellent customer service to our audience and performers and creating a great work environment for our volunteers. Responsibilities include supervising volunteers and managing all “front of house” activities during Ark shows including concessions sales, artist merchandise sales, membership, ticket scanning, and ushering. This position reports to the House Manager and works closely with the Operations Director, Tech Manager, Sound Tech Volunteers, and Box Office Staff. Specific duties include:
MANAGE NIGHTLY OPERATIONS
- Serve as an agent of The Ark and a representative of Ark management to patrons, performers, and Volunteers
- Communicate effectively with Ark patrons, performers, Volunteers, and other Ark staff members
- Provide excellent customer service, including responding to patron concerns
- Complete regular nightly Manager tasks
- Supervise bar and food service operations
- Supervise all concession and merchandise cash handling operations
- Reconcile nightly cash registers and collect merchandise commissions from artists
- Complete cash register and merchandise reporting
- Effectively manage emergency or crisis situations
- Effectively communicate and document nightly details or challenges that require follow-up attention
SUPERVISE CLUB VOLUNTEERS
- Assign and coordinate Volunteer staffing for nightly front-of-house operations
- Train Volunteers and introduce new tasks and roles on show nights
- Understand, implement and effectively communicate Ark policies and procedures
- Assist in facilitating clear and positive communication between Volunteers and Ark management
- Understand those areas that need to be handled by other Ark staff and appropriately defer to Ark management as necessary
- Maintain effective communication with the House Manager and other Ark management staff
MANAGE NIGHTLY SHOW DETAILS & ARTIST COMMUNICATION
- Interact with artists and touring personnel the night of the performance
- Distribute hospitality items to artists as reflected in performer contracts
- Complete artist settlement sheet
- Communicate artist settlement sheet to artist and provide artist payment after the show
- Communicate with Tech Manager and/or Sound Tech Volunteer as well as Box Office Staff
- Collect and share show details with Volunteers, Sound Tech, and Box Office Staff
- Coordinate sponsorship announcements and special arrangements
- Coordinate special event details on an as-needed basis
OTHER
- Fill staffing needs for special events and offsite events as required and available
- Complete certification or training requirements as needed in relation to house operations
- Some lifting required
- Related duties as assigned
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Required availability of 1-2 nights per week from approximately 6:00 pm-midnight; one weekend evening preferred
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; friendly and approachable demeanor
- Ability to effectively manage and interact with a variety of people in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment
- Ability to train, supervise, motivate, and delegate tasks to a diverse and always changing Volunteer staff
- Demonstrated ability to multi-task and work well under pressure with minimal supervision
- Must be comfortable with cash handling, cash register operation, and merchandise sales
- Strong math skills and attention to detail
- Must be able to complete and maintain related certification and training requirements

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Demonstrated interest in or experience with music and/or creative arts
- Familiarity with and appreciation of the types of music The Ark presents
- Prior experience managing volunteers in a high-energy public setting preferred
- Prior experience in a theater, food service or retail environment a plus
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is primarily indoors within a performance venue and may have some exposure to fumes, odor, dust, etc. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. The lighting environment ranges from bright lighting to dark.
