DESCRIPTION:David Wilcox is a penetrating storyteller. The revered folk musician has an effortless talent for spinning lyrics that quietly cut deep\, and crafting melodies that seamlessly ride the plot twists and turns. Wilcox handily exemplifies the power of lyrical and musical catharsis \nThe Ohio native with the warm baritone found his artistic muse in North Carolina during the mid-1980s. In 1987 he released his debut album\, “The Nightshift Watchman\,” which led to winning the prestigious Kerrville Folk Festival in 1988.Thirty-plus years and twenty-plus albums later\, Wilcox won top honors in the 23rd annual USA Songwriting Competition in 2018 for his effervescent “We Make the Way by Walking.” Wilcox has deservedly earned praise over the years in The New York Times\, The Boston Globe\, The Los Angeles Times\, and Rolling Stone\, to name a few. Today\, Wilcox is still earning his admirers with storytelling that cuts deep into the soul and observes the human condition from both the nerve center and the outside looking in. SUMMARY:Rachael Kilgour
DESCRIPTION:We first heard this songwriter as one half of the duo Sound an Echo\, and then we had her in the Family Room during the pandemic. Rachael Kilgour is a Minnesotan songwriter and performing artist whose sincere\, lyric-driven work has been called both brave and humane. The 2015 grand prize winner of the international NewSong Music Performance & Songwriting Competition and winner of the 2017 Kerrville New Folk Contest\, Rachael has been featured at NYC’s Lincoln Center\, at The Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. and by the ASCAP Music Cafe at the Sundance Film Festival. Married in her early twenties\, Rachael chronicled her life as a young parent in a same-sex partnership and addressed sociopolitical issues from government corruption to income inequality and religious hypocrisy. In 2014\, divorce brought an unwanted end to her role as a member of the family she had helped to grow. In the aftermath\, Kilgour found solace in songwriting. Rachael was awarded a 2020 Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant to focus on a songwriting project about the life and recent death of her father\, and the album\, “My Father Loved Me\,” is out now\, and it’s terrific. \nThe Ark’s Artist Spotlight Series is made possible with support from the Ford Motor Company Fund. DESCRIPTION:Aleksi Campagne is uniquely qualified to offer a contemporary\, indie-folk take on the time-honored fiddle-singing tradition. When playing live\, Aleksi floors audiences by singing while bowing his violin and leading his four-piece band. His original music blends folk song writing with an edgy\, multi-layered sound resulting from his unique combination of voice\, violin and looping-effect pedals. He’s not just a folksinger with a guitar! Although he’s coming to The Ark with his first full-length album\, “For the Giving\,” Aleksi Campagne is not new to the stage. At five years old\, he began performing alongside his mother\, Canadian folk icon Connie Kaldor. At 19 he moved  to Paris to study under jazz violin legend Didier Lockwood. At 21\, Aleksi became the only student to have ever been accepted into the classical violin\, the jazz violin and the jazz voice performance programs at McGill University. And\, by 25\, Aleksi had graced the lineups of some of Canada’ most beloved folk festivals—including the Mariposa Folk Festival\, the Regina Folk Festival\, and the Northern Lights Festival\, among others.

The Nashville-based indie pop singer/songwriter\, originally from Rhode Island\, displays craftsmanship beyond her years\, evident through her use of salient detail\, raw emotion\, and poignant word choice to describe moments “exactly as they feel.” \nIn spring 2018\, she was crowned Grand Champion of the Mid-Atlantic Singer-Songwriter Competition\, and the following June she delivered a Tedx Talk at Firefly 2018\, discussing the importance of honesty rooted in her songwriting process. \nMarielle Kraft’s debut studio EP\, “The Deep End” officially released on July 12th\, 2019\, is described by The Music Mermaid as “song after song of mini pop addictions.” In February 2020\, Marielle Kraft co-released an “anthemic” and “heart-filled” single with Joshua Howard entitled “In It Together”\, which quickly gained traction across platforms. \nHer October 23rd single\, “Portland\,” breathtakingly captures the moment we find ourselves in\, and speaks volumes of the young artist’s songwriting abilities. \nMarielle Kraft has shared stages with names as big as Jon McLaughlin\, Ava Max\, and Betty Who.
