This first collection in seven years\, due August 20 on New West Records\, spotlights a seasoned tunesmith in peak form as he turns toward reflection (“Vaquero”) and revelation (closer “Blackberry Winter”). Familiar foundations guide the journey. “There’s a definite Los Angeles vibe to this record\,” McMurtry says. “The ghost of Warren Zevon seems to be stomping around among the guitar tracks. Don’t know how he got in there. He never signed on for work for hire.” \nThe Horses and the Hounds is a reunion of sorts. McMurtry recorded the new album with legendary producer Ross Hogarth (Ozzy Osbourne\, John Fogerty\, Van Halen\, Keb’ Mo’) at Jackson Browne’s Groovemaster’s in Santa Monica\, California\, a world class studio that has housed such legends as Bob Dylan (2012’s Tempest) and David Crosby (2016’s Lighthouse) as well as Browne himself for I’m Alive (1993) and New Found Glory\, Coming Home (2006). McMurtry and Hogarth first worked together 30 years ago\, when Hogarth was a recording engineer in the employ of John Mellencamp at Mellencamp’s own Belmont Studios near Bloomington\, Indiana. Hogarth recorded McMurtry’s first two albums\, Too Long in the Wasteland and Candyland\, for Columbia Records and later mixed McMurtry’s first self-produced album\, Saint Mary of the Woods\, for Sugar Hill Records. Another veteran of those three releases\, guitarist David Grissom (Joe Ely\, John Mellencamp\, Dixie Chicks)\, returns with some of his finest work. \nAccordingly\, the new collection marks another upward trajectory: The Horses and the Hounds will be McMurtry’s debut album on genre-defining Americana record label New West Records (Steve Earle\, Rodney Crowell\, Lucinda Williams\, John Hiatt\, Aaron Lee Tasjan\, Buddy Miller\, dozens more). \n“I first became aware of James McMurtry’s formidable songwriting prowess while working at Bug Music Publishing in the ’90s\,” says New West president John Allen. “He’s a true talent. I don’t think anybody writes better lyrics.” McMurtry’s albums Just Us Kids (2008) and Childish Things (2005) back the claim\, each scoring endless critical praise. The former earned McMurtry his highest Billboard 200 chart position in two decades (since eclipsed by Complicated Game) and notched Americana Music Award nominations. Add a healthy dash of punk rock and oldie timey music\, and you have Black Jake & the Carnies. \nThese men create sounds that make Tod Browning’s Freaks look positively conventional. The glorious dichotomy is that the tunes are catchy enough to be disconcertingly accessible. You are\, indeed\, one of us. \n“The idea for Black Jake and the Carnies came to Jake in 1999\, when he had an ecstatic vision of a band playing fast-paced music on traditional instruments\, full of entertaining gimmicks\, props\, and crowd interaction\,” says the band. “The original incarnation of the band started in 2002\, and played one disastrous Halloween Show at Trinity House Theater before breaking up.  Jake kept the vision alive and kept writing songs over the next four years until one day in 2006 he decided to get a band back together.  A few guys who knew some guys down the street eventually turned into a new Black Jake & the Carnies overnight.” \nThe band\, comprised of Black Jake (banjo\, vocals\, kick drum\, tambourine\, songwriting)\, Kyle Kipp (guitar\, backing vocals)\, Wally Jarvis (hand percussion\, accordion\, harmonica\, backing vocals)\, Ozzie Andrews (bass)\, and Gary Ritter (Fiddle\, Mandolin\, backing vocals)\, are five hard-working men from Southeast Michigan who wallow in the imagery of sideshows and carnivals. “When you grow up in a small town\, you have hair down your back and everyone’s a redneck\, you get called a freak a lot\,” Jake told Detroit’s Metro Times in 2011. “So I get attracted to the outcasts\, the freaks\, being somebody who’s on display.” \nHe’s not wrong. When Black Jake & the Carnies played a prison show in Belgium as part of the Belgium/Netherlands/Germany tour in 2011\, the touring company said that they were the only band they’d ever seen who got the prisoners to jump up out of their seats and dance. Drawing on her roots in folk\, Americana\, and country\, Rochelle has found a sound that is uniquely her own. In January 2020 she released her first solo recording; an EP titled “In Time\,” and she’s continuing to explore her voice as a solo songwriter. DESCRIPTION:George Crotty has forged his own exciting vocabulary on the cello\,  pushing the boundaries of the cello as a jazz instrument. Following his graduation from the Berklee College of Music\, Crotty immersed himself in New York’s jazz and world music scenes\, playing with several ensembles\, such as the Brooklyn Raga Massive\, and the Detroit-based National Arab Orchestra. The George Crotty Trio’s “Chronotope” (2022) showcases the Canadian cellist’s expressive fluidity and modal orientation. The group’s cross-cultural interplay draws on diverse influences within jazz and global music traditions including post-bop\, modal jazz\, Indian raga\, and Arabic maqam.

Tickets have been refunded through the original point of purchase. \nThe name ‘Johnny A.’ might not be so mainstream\, but there’s no doubt that it’s synonymous with guitar. His passion began at the age of thirteen\, when he first saw the Beatles in Boston\, followed two years later by an in-person witnessing of Jimi Hendrix. From there\, he was hooked\, getting a cheap beginner guitar to try and play along with his early heroes — which also included Yardbirds icons Eric Clapton\, Jeff Beck\, and Jimmy Page. Soon enough\, Johnny A. got it.\n\nBy the 1970’s\, he was forming bands in the New England area\, drawing attention from several established musicians\, like Derek and the Dominos’ keyboardist Bobby Whitlock and Doug Clifford of Creedence Clearwater Revival. Johnny A. became Music Director of J. Geils Band singer Peter Wolf’s outfit\, coordinating the onstage arrangements\, playing on several tours and co-producing Wolf’s 1996 album\, *Long Line.* What’s more\, he was even asked to join The Yardbirds as their lead guitarist in 2015.\n\nAll this is to say that Johnny A. has the chops\, and that’s not to mention his prolific solo career. Spanning three full-length albums\, Johnny A. has earned a Grammy Award nomination\, the honor of Boston Music Awards\, “Blues Artist of the Year 2010\,” and a spot in the revered Boston Music Hall of Fame. Ever the restless spirit\, Johnny A. continues to glide across genres effortlessly\, exploring elements of jazz\, soul. Refunds have been issued from original point of purchase. \nFor over 15 years now\, the three members of The Langan Band have been carving out their own lawlessly virtuosic path of sound; rampaging through the boundaries of conventional genre and cavorting into the territories of wild abandon\, purest intimacy\, and unconditional musical elation. \nThe trio were initially brought together by a deep respect of traditional song and music\, yet they discovered a mutual love of the evisceration and regeneration of these pieces into provocative and fascinating new compositions\, as was recognised by the band winning the prestigious Danny Kyle Award at Glasgow’s Celtic Connections Festival at the start of their journey together. This sound and process went on to inform the band’s now mostly original repertoire\, and has resulted in a musical experience quite unlike any other. \nAyrshire-born John Langan is found centre-stage\, seated on an explosive foot percussion rig of his own devising and fronting the trio with intricate fiery guitar rhythms and witheringly sweet and scathing vocals. To his right stands Alastair Caplin\, a classically trained violinist equally discerning in both the London Prog-Folk/Jazz scenes he occupied for years and also the blistering traditional reels and jigs of his native Outer Hebrides. Stage left is the domain of Angus-born Dave Tunstall and his double bass; from here emanates a seductive concoction of eerily-bowed soundscapes\, heart-stopping bass lines\, and in conjunction with Caplin’s blurred bowing a truly monumental wall of orchestral noise. The sound of the group reaches its zenith when all of these instruments are joined by the three voices singing together in razor-tight harmony to create an absolute cacophony of joy. \nWhilst it is possible to see the evidence of influences the band have drawn on and enjoyed (Trad. Scots music\, Eastern European Gypsy\, Bluegrass and American Old-Time to name a few)\, the true nature of the sound from The Langan Band is best described as un-pigeon-holeable\, yet utterly irresistible. \nIn 2024 the band broke onto the North American market with 5 tours of USA & Canada. Through huge mainstage performances at festivals such as Telluride Bluegrass and radio play such as the prestigious Mountain Stage Radio\, they are building a loyal and wild new fanbase across the Atlantic.

With a unique sound that hinges on craftily blended genres\, their music provides a refreshing perspective on klezmer music\, infusing traditional Jewish music with contemporary flavor by mixing in elements of jazz\, balkan\, funk\, latin\, and polka. Schmaltz’s debut album\, “The Seltzer Man”\, highlights what fans love: creative compositions\, incredible improvisation\, and the undeniable energy of a roaring horn section. DESCRIPTION:Due to the current air quality advisory\, our artists are unable to perform this evening.  We plan to be back at the Stage on Main on Saturday evening. \n  \nWe are excited to once again partner with the Ann Arbor Summer Art Fair to bring live music each evening of the art fairs to the Stage on Main at the corner of Main and William in the Palio lot. Stop by and join one of our favorite street parties of the year! \nTHE RUPPLE BROTHERS\n6pm \nThe Rupple Brothers are a psychedelic folk ensemble who combine a love for family\, music\, life\, and improvisation to create a musical space unlike any other. Born unto song\, brothers Evan and Cole\, and an ever expanding cast of soul brothers\, traverse the entire spectrum of sound and space; each being proficient in multiple ways of musical strangeness\, while bringing a positive and powerful family message with their brand of wild folk. They have carved themselves out a respected place amongst the Michigan music scene\, throwing their own annual grassroots festival Handmade Music Festival in their home of Chesaning\, opening for bands like The Way Down Wanderers\, Chirp\, The Mallett Brothers Band\, Tejon Street Corner Thieves\, Good Old War\, opening up for White Denim at Ann Arbor’s Sonic Lunch\, winning the Review Award for “Best Duo”\, and playing top tier venues and festivals across the state. They plan to carry their stories of song to the furthest reaches of the universe. \nBOBBY ALU\n7:30pm \nIf you ask Byron Bay’s Bobby Alu what his music sounds like\, he’ll tell you how he hopes it makes you feel: like you have your favorite drink in hand\, sipping as the sun sets on a balmy evening that’s laden with the promise of adventure. In an ideal world\, he’d follow summer around the earth\, in his endless quest to nail that feeling in his songs. \nFor Bobby it’s all about letting the music decide where it takes you – creatively and physically – and following the threads of curiosity large\, small and often strange. It’s playing ukulele with old friends at the local market in exchange for a box of vegetables\, because how weird is it to improvise along to people buying bananas at 7am on a Tuesday? It’s going to Ghana with just a hunch and a WhatsApp number to track down the rhythms that lit up his heart. It’s touring the world for five years as Xavier Rudd’s percussionist\, learning how to be in service to the vibe of a room\, and how to make the jump to being an international performer in his own right. It’s honoring his Samoan heritage through sharing the stage and releasing an EP with his mother to connect with the language of her homeland. Always\, it’s about being open to discovery: if you choose music\, you choose it all.
