SUMMARY:Pete Muller
DESCRIPTION:Pete Muller has spent much of his adult life walking a tightrope between two vastly different worlds.  \n“One part of me is a very practical\, analytical thinker\,” says the gifted singer/songwriter and innovative business leader\, “and the other is this creative artist who can’t help but express what’s going on in his soul. For a long time\, I thought I had to choose between the two\, but I’ve realized that I can love both sides of myself\, that it’s AND\, not OR.”  \nMore Time\, Muller’s captivating new album\, is proof of that. Recorded in Memphis with producer/engineer Matt Ross-Spang (Jason Isbell\, Margo Price) and featuring a duet with Lisa Loeb\, the collection marks a dramatic leap forward for Muller\, who finds himself exploring the push and pull of responsibility and desire\, predictability and adventure\, commitment\, and temptation. Where Muller’s previous work leaned more towards carefully arranged folk and roots\, More Time is a freewheeling slice of rock and soul captured with an all-star band including celebrated bassist Dave Smith (Al Green\, Wilson Pickett)\, famed Texas guitarist Will Sexton (Joe Ely\, Roky Erickson)\, Memphis organist Rick Steff (Lucero\, Cat Power)\, and longtime Wilco drummer Ken Coomer. The result is an ecstatic exploration of what it means to be human in all its messy\, mixed-up contradictions\, a sometimes-exultant\, sometimes-pensive meditation that embraces AND over OR as it revels in the joy of discovering—and becoming—the people we’re meant to be. \nThe Ark’s Artist Spotlight Series is made possible with support from Ford Philanthropy. It is presented live\, and also livestreamed on The Ark’s Facebook page. \nTonight’s show is FREE (nonperishables accepted for Food Gatherers).

SUMMARY:Humbird
DESCRIPTION:Humbird (Siri Undlin) is a Minneapolis based singer-songwriter\, poet\, and storyteller inspired by the crystalline chill of her home state’s northern winters. Undlin twines experimental indie folk rock\, environmental Americana\, and orchestral compositions into lush landscapes of mesmerizing sound. \nReleased in September 2019\, her debut full length album\, Pharmakon\, was received with remarkable critical acclaim and has amassed over 20 million streams since its release. After the release of her sophomore album Still Life (2021) she was chosen as the winner of the 2021 Kerrville Folk Festival’s song-writing competition and went on to teach songwriting at both Sisters Folk Festival and Rocky Mountain Folks Fest. 2023’s tour highlights included her First Avenue main stage debut\, appearances at Sisters Folks Festival\, Mile of Music & Rocky Mountain Folks as well as direct tour support for Watchhouse\, Mipso and Indigo De Souza\, collectively covering most of the country. Her third third full length album ‘Right On’ was released on April 12 and has been her loudest\, most notable record to date. \nA Humbird live performance is intimate and earthy\, literal and metaphorical.  The band nimbly prances around the lilt of Undlin’s unfaltering fervent and haunting voice – the focal point.  Although the songs and stories hold their own\, the embellishments the band supply add the perfect splash of timbre and color to deliver a dynamic and engaging performance. \nThe Ark’s Artist Spotlight Series is made possible with support from Ford Philanthropy. It is presented live\, and also livestreamed on The Ark’s Facebook page. \nTonight’s show is FREE (nonperishables accepted for Food Gatherers).

SUMMARY:Fantastic Cat
DESCRIPTION:They said it couldn’t be done. Four different songwriters joining forces to form a single band? There was simply no precedent (outside of CSNY\, The Beatles\, The Traveling Wilburys\, The Highwaymen\, Monsters of Folk\, etc). And yet Fantastic Cat did it anyway\, defying the odds and teaming up to record their highly unanticipated 2022 debut\, The Very Best Of Fantastic Cat. Hailed by Rolling Stone as “a wildly satisfying collection of folk-rock\, country\, Americana\, and good old rock & roll” that offers “equal doses of Dylan and Springsteen\,” the album earned the vocal-trading\, instrument-swapping collective their national TV debut\, sold-out headline dates around the US and Europe\, festival performances everywhere from Sundance to Take Root\, and a song in the Showtime series Tulsa King. In 2023\, the unlikely four-piece teamed up with all-star producer Butch Walker for a 50th anniversary take on Wings’ “Band On The Run\,” which prompted even more love from Rolling Stone\, who dubbed them “the Harlem Globetrotters of Americana.”  \nIndividually\, each member of Fantastic Cat boasts their own impressive resume along with a litany of critical acclaim. Paste declared Don DiLego’s latest album a “stunner.” NPR said Anthony D’Amato “sings and writes in the tradition of Bruce Springsteen or Josh Ritter.” Rolling Stone called Brian Dunne’s new record “the sleeper album of the year” and praised Mike Montali’s band\, Hollis Brown\, as “the soundtrack for a late-night drive through the American heartland.” Collectively\, though\, the four transcend their respective roots\, emerging as velvet-clad rock and roll cooperative far greater than the sum of its parts.  \nThey say some cats are born fantastic; others have fantasy thrust upon them. These guys are somewhere in the middle. \nThe Ark’s Artist Spotlight Series is made possible with support from Ford Philanthropy. It is presented live\, and also livestreamed on The Ark’s Facebook page. \nTonight’s show is FREE (nonperishables accepted for Food Gatherers).

SUMMARY:The Wellermen
DESCRIPTION:Bass singing folk group The Wellermen were discovered during the viral Sea Shanty trend of early 2021. The four had only met in person once with members Bobby Waters & Luke Taylor based in the US and Jonny Stewart & Sam Pope based in the UK. The four members’ lives were to change when they dueted with a seemingly innocuous ‘Sea Shanty’ (Wellerman) on TikTok. Since the release of the now ubiquitous TikTok\, it’s been viewed 100m+ times across multiple platforms and continents\, and has seen The Wellermen appear at events like The Brits\, shows like Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Take Away\, Last Week Tonight With John Oliver and The Colbert Show & ABC News Australia. The Wellermen used their moment of unexpected virality for lasting good\, raising money via proceeds from ‘Wellerman’ for the Marine Conservation Society\, giving back to the seas.  \nSince then the group have gone on to release their debut album containing even more viral hits\, from ‘Misty Mountains’ and ‘Nancy Mulligan’ to the North Sea Trend phenomenon ‘Hoist The Colours’ which reached #3 on the global TikTok sound chart in February 2024. The group have achieved 150m streams to date and amassed a global audience of millions in the process. \nThe Wellermen embark on their debut USA tour in June 2024\, with their hotly anticipated follow up album due for release Winter 2024. \nThe Ark’s Artist Spotlight Series is made possible with support from Ford Philanthropy. It is presented live\, and also livestreamed on The Ark’s Facebook page.   \nTonight’s show is FREE (nonperishables accepted for Food Gatherers).

SUMMARY:David Wilcox
DESCRIPTION:David Wilcox is a penetrating storyteller. The revered folk musician has an effortless talent for spinning lyrics that quietly cut deep\, and crafting melodies that seamlessly ride the plot twists and turns. Wilcox handily exemplifies the power of lyrical and musical catharsis \nThe Ohio native with the warm baritone found his artistic muse in North Carolina during the mid-1980s. In 1987 he released his debut album\, “The Nightshift Watchman\,” which led to winning the prestigious Kerrville Folk Festival in 1988.Thirty-plus years and twenty-plus albums later\, Wilcox won top honors in the 23rd annual USA Songwriting Competition in 2018 for his effervescent “We Make the Way by Walking.” Wilcox has deservedly earned praise over the years in The New York Times\, The Boston Globe\, The Los Angeles Times\, and Rolling Stone\, to name a few. Today\, Wilcox is still earning his admirers with storytelling that cuts deep into the soul and observes the human condition from both the nerve center and the outside looking in. That kind of storytelling is certain to become a good friend. \nThe Ark’s Artist Spotlight Series is made possible with support from the Ford Motor Company Fund. SUMMARY:Rachael Kilgour
DESCRIPTION:We first heard this songwriter as one half of the duo Sound an Echo\, and then we had her in the Family Room during the pandemic. Rachael Kilgour is a Minnesotan songwriter and performing artist whose sincere\, lyric-driven work has been called both brave and humane. The 2015 grand prize winner of the international NewSong Music Performance & Songwriting Competition and winner of the 2017 Kerrville New Folk Contest\, Rachael has been featured at NYC’s Lincoln Center\, at The Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. and by the ASCAP Music Cafe at the Sundance Film Festival. Married in her early twenties\, Rachael chronicled her life as a young parent in a same-sex partnership and addressed sociopolitical issues from government corruption to income inequality and religious hypocrisy. In 2014\, divorce brought an unwanted end to her role as a member of the family she had helped to grow. In the aftermath\, Kilgour found solace in songwriting. Rachael was awarded a 2020 Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant to focus on a songwriting project about the life and recent death of her father\, and the album\, “My Father Loved Me\,” is out now\, and it’s terrific. \nThe Ark’s Artist Spotlight Series is made possible with support from the Ford Motor Company Fund. SUMMARY:Aleksi Campagne
DESCRIPTION:Aleksi Campagne is uniquely qualified to offer a contemporary\, indie-folk take on the time-honored fiddle-singing tradition. When playing live\, Aleksi floors audiences by singing while bowing his violin and leading his four-piece band. His original music blends folk song writing with an edgy\, multi-layered sound resulting from his unique combination of voice\, violin and looping-effect pedals. He’s not just a folksinger with a guitar! Although he’s coming to The Ark with his first full-length album\, “For the Giving\,” Aleksi Campagne is not new to the stage. At five years old\, he began performing alongside his mother\, Canadian folk icon Connie Kaldor. At 19 he moved  to Paris to study under jazz violin legend Didier Lockwood. At 21\, Aleksi became the only student to have ever been accepted into the classical violin\, the jazz violin and the jazz voice performance programs at McGill University. And\, by 25\, Aleksi had graced the lineups of some of Canada’ most beloved folk festivals—including the Mariposa Folk Festival\, the Regina Folk Festival\, and the Northern Lights Festival\, among others.

Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show.  \nCOVID-19 FAQ \nThe Corn Potato String Band earns high praise in traditional American music\, keeping old time fiddle and banjo music from a one-way trip to the dustbins of history. Theirs is a story of struggle\, hard knocks and triumph. Essentially unable to cope with modern life\, the members of this band are outcasts of society who survive by playing the lost music of the flatlands where they were raised. \nThe Corn Potatos have delighted audiences with their driving fiddle tunes and harmonious singing across the US\, Canada\, Europe\, Mexico\, and India. They are all multi-instrumentalists dedicated to continuing the music and dance traditions of the Central and Southern US. In addition to being champion fiddlers they play banjo\, guitar\, bass and mandolin and deftly handle many different antiquated styles including ballads\, “ho-downs\,” country “rags” and southern gospel\, specializing in twin fiddling and double banjo tunes. \n

Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show. \nCOVID-19 FAQ \nIt’s hard to believe\, because each show is fresh and new\, but the RFD Boys have been delighting Michigan audiences since 1969 with their fabulous musicianship and sly\, exquisitely timed between-song humor. They’re legends of Michigan bluegrass\, but they’re more than that too. With an appearance on the cover of Bluegrass Unlimited\, with songs recorded by the likes of the Country Gentlemen\, and with performances alongside bluegrass greats like Bill Monroe and Ralph Stanley\, the RFD Boys are a part of America’s bluegrass tradition. The RFD Boys one of southeastern Michigan’s most durable musical ensembles\, and their shows capture a deep slice of musical Ann Arbor. Their 50th-anniversary appearance at the Folk Festival was a special moment and introduced many listeners to Dan Roehrig\, who joined the band on guitar\, mandolin\, and bass in mid-2018. Dan grew up listening to Doc Watson\, Clarence White\, and Tony Rice\, and you can hear it in both his singing and guitar playing. \nAlso available as a Virtual concert on our Facebook page. Free!
