SUMMARY:Josh Ritter
DESCRIPTION:The Ark helped spread Josh Ritter’s name among Michigan audiences when he made a standout performance at the Ann Arbor Folk Festival in 2003\, and we’re proud that we\, along with Emmylou Harris and Paste magazine\, which named Josh one of the 100 greatest living songwriters in 2006\, spotted this monster talent in the making. Josh has gone on to record a dozen albums\, write a book or two\, tour with Jason Isbell\, and play much larger halls than The Ark. So it’s very special to us to invite Josh to perform in a rare small club appearance. He’s an entrancing performer\, a true master of the songwriter’s art. This is a special Works In Progress + Songs You Know solo show. Says Josh: “I’ve realized that a necessary part of working on records is finding the material that hangs together. I write A LOT of songs\, and not all of them play nicely with the others. The most useful (and fun) way to find a song’s heart is to periodically play some shows where I’m able to get it all out there and see how I feel about them. I’m really looking forward to these shows for the chance to get all these songs\, and some that are old friends\, out on the table for a good time.”

SUMMARY:Glen Phillips of Toad The Wet Sprocket
DESCRIPTION:Glen Phillips is the lead singer and main songwriter for the band Toad the Wet Sprocket\, which he joined when he was only 14. In the words of James Christopher Monger\, “Phillips has matured into . . . a quiet storm that dutifully blends Cat Stevens’ confident huskiness and Jackson Browne’s weary but warm observer of all things broken.” Of Glen’s album\, “Swallowed by the New\,” Chris Steffen of Allmusic.com writes\, “Songs like ‘Leaving Old Town’ and ‘Unwritten’ explicitly describe moving beyond the past and into the unknown.” Now signed to the acoustic-oriented Compass label\, Glen Phillips has evolved into one of the great folk-rock songwriters of our time\, still staying true to his Toad-like roots\, and The Ark is the place to hear him! Of his latest album\, “There Is So Much Here.” Glen says\, “I’ve seldom allowed myself to stay in one place for very long. I was lucky during the COVID lockdown to move in with my girlfriend\, now fianceé\, and to stay home for the longest stretch I’ve had since the birth of my daughter\, 20 years ago. After a life of travel and seeking out peak experiences\, I began to appreciate the subtle beauty of sitting still.” \nSinger-songwriter Chris Pureka opens.

SUMMARY:Save The Speakeasy Benefit Concert
DESCRIPTION:In 2022\, Johnny Williams’ home — above his well-known and highly regarded house concert venue\, Johnny’s Speakeasy — suffered a devastating fire. Johnny paid for a premium homeowner’s replacement policy for nearly 30 years\, but after 18+ months his insurance company continues to delay fair payment on his claim. A denial of fair payment will shutter this historic Ann Arbor musical institution and force Johnny Williams\, a pillar of our community\, to move away. As of now\, the insurance company stopped paying for temporary housing so Johnny has been forced to move up north near family. This benefit concert features a lineup of some of the finest artists from across Michigan performing in support and solidarity with the grassroots\, community driven campaign to Save the Speakeasy and Bring Johnny Home! All proceeds will go to a community created legal fund to help Johnny attain a fair settlement so that he can return to Ann Arbor\, rebuild his home\, and reopen the beloved Speakeasy. \nLivestream the show here: https://www.facebook.com/events/2348396778883858/ \nPlease note early start time. \nLineup:\nChris Buhalis\nJudy Banker Band\nAl Bettis\nDave Boutette & Kristi Davis\nAnnie & Rod Capps Band\nRochelle Clark\nShari Kane & Dave Steele\nBilly King and San & Emily Slomovits\nMisty Lyn & the Big Beautiful\nPeter Madcat Ruth\nThe Sidemen\nThe Dick Siegel Trio\nRollie Tussing Trio\nThe Whiskey Charmers\nWilson Thicket

SUMMARY:Vienna Teng
DESCRIPTION:“I was in a long-distance relationship with music for many years\,” jokes singer-songwriter Vienna Teng. Long-distance\, perhaps\, but long-running. In 2002\, Vienna released her debut album Waking Hour\, landing her on NPR’s Weekend Edition\, The Late Show with David Letterman\, and the top of Amazon’s music charts. Four more albums followed\, most recently Aims in 2013\, as well as the music for The Fourth Messenger by playwright Tanya Shaffer. Together with Vienna’s captivating live performances and thoughtful online presence\, her work has built a devoted following across generations and continents. \nStill\, other pursuits have always beckoned. Vienna returned to academia in 2010 to study environmental sustainability\, which led to a new career working on climate change\, energy and waste issues. She also became a bonus parent to her partner’s two kids\, and in early 2020 welcomed a newborn addition to the family – just in time for pandemic lockdown. \n“I learned a lot about what it means to hold two truths in your head at the same time\, as the saying goes\,” Vienna says of that period. Out of that idea emerged some of the most intricate and impassioned songwriting she’s ever done: a pair of songs called “We’ve Got You\,” about leading and leaning on one’s community. When she performs it on stage – solo\, live-looping her voice\, keyboards and percussion to layer the two songs together – the audience response is electric. \n“We’ve Got You” also marks a new chapter of merging her musical and environmental vocations. In 2022\, she launched a “music x climate action” community on Patreon\, combining monthly livestream shows with Zoom climate action sessions\, and hosting workshops between concerts that participants have described as “life-changing\,” “rocket fuel\,” and “the perfect antidote to despair.” \nThe long-distance phase is over. Now it’s time for communion – and moving forward. \nAre you ready to do more about climate change\, but feel a bit overwhelmed? Wish you knew where to put your limited time & energy? This workshop might be for you: \nDrawing on her recent years working in environmental sustainability\, Vienna will help you discover what enjoyable\, meaningful climate action looks like for you personally\, tailored to your unique circumstances\, interests\, and superpowers. You’ll get to know some fellow music lovers taking their own similar journeys\, and you’ll come away with practical first steps to actually make it happen. (Plus there might be a bonus music moment or two.) \nThe workshop will run for 2 hours and will be capped at 20 participants\, to make sure each person gets ample support. \nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/1217-climate-action-workshop-with-vienna-teng-the-ark-tickets-641584324987

SUMMARY:Victor Wooten and The Wooten Brothers
DESCRIPTION:Hailed as the most influential bassist since Jaco Pastorius\, Victor Wooten is known for his solo recordings and tours\, and as a founding member of the Grammy-winning supergroup Bela Fleck & The Flecktones. He is an innovator on the bass guitar\, as well as a talented composer\, arranger\, producer\, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist. Continuing the tradition of virtuosity forged by James Brown\, Funkadelic\, and Prince\, Victor will make you wonder how he could possibly be creating his incredible bass effects in real time. His show is a high-wire act on low-pitched strings that owes some of its inspiration to another Wooten mentor\, the inimitable Bootsy Collins. A multiple-time winner of Bass Player magazine’s Bass Player of the Year award and a five-time Grammy winner\, Victor Wooten is a musical experience not to be missed! Tonight Victor appears with brothers Joseph\, Roy\, and Regi Wooten.

SUMMARY:The Wailin' Jennys
DESCRIPTION:The Wailin’ Jennys are neither a reggae group nor an all-female Waylon Jennings tribute band. Three extraordinary voices with one singular vision: The Wailin’ Jennys continue to evolve into far more than the melodious sum of their individual talents years after blowing in on a fresh acoustic breeze from Canada’s midwestern heartland. Canadians Nicky Mehta\, and Ruth Moody and New Yorker Heather Masse were all well-established talents individually\, and their collaboration is an example of how exciting it can be when performers with distinct outlooks find ways of working together. Each member of the trio contributes distinctive original songs to the mix\, which ranges from folk-rock to Celtic to traditional song. This trio has won fans for its incredible harmonies at venues ranging from “A Prairie Home Companion” (multiple times) to the small-town parks and festivals in Manitoba that gave them their start. \nBlue LLama Jazz Club is proud to be the stage sponsor of The Wailin’ Jennys show at The Ark! Show your ticket at Blue LLama after the event on Friday (10/27) or Saturday (10/28) to get your first cocktail for just $2!

SUMMARY:May Erlewine
DESCRIPTION:Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show.\nCOVID-19 FAQ \nOne of the Midwest’s most prolific and passionate songwriters\, May Erlewine continues to share her gift for writing songs of substance that feel both new and soulfully familiar. Her lyrics offer a window into her heartbreak\, her empowerment\, and her emboldened spirit. These lyrics\, which are really stories crafted through May’s unique experiences\, are rooted in wisdom\, joy\, sorrow\, simplicity\, and love. Musically\, she carries the songwriter’s torch through many genres and sonic landscapes. May considers her career in the music industry as a service-oriented one and uses her platform for positive change. She stresses the importance of environmental advocacy\, social justice\, creative empowerment\, and community building as necessary work in our world. May’s body of work has become an anthem and an example of why we need to listen to women\, empower women\, and why we need to hear their stories. May’s work has been spotlighted by Rolling Stone and NBC’s “The Voice” and covered by countless artists.  \nThis performance will be in celebration of her new record\, The Real Thing. The album produced by Theo Katzman\, is a collection of songs performed live in a room\, deep in the Manistee National Forest. SUMMARY:Leo Kottke
DESCRIPTION:Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show.\nCOVID-19 FAQ \nThe Los Angeles Times calls Leo Kottke “an American legend in the guitar world\, and a king of his own private musical world.” If you haven’t heard Leo Kottke for a while\, though\, you may have missed how one of the fastest 6- and 12-string guitar players around has also become one of the most innovative and least musically classifiable. SUMMARY:Matt Nathanson
DESCRIPTION:Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show.\nCOVID-19 FAQ \nA lot of people know Matt Nathanson for his 2007 hit “Come On Get Higher\,” but his career has only kept growing since then. He comes to Michigan with a new album\, “Boston Accent\,” whose stripped-down arrangements recall his beginnings as an acoustic troubadour. That’s all to the good for this show—it’s not so common to hear him in a club The Ark’s size. Matt has a unique sense of humor on stage that can get lost in larger venues\, and we’re looking forward to welcoming him back for the first time since the pandemic began. “I wanted to make a real singer/songwriter record this time. an ‘inspired by cat stevens\, joni mitchell\, paul simon\, tom petty kinda record … which is something i’ve been running away from since ‘Ernst\,’ Matt says.

DESCRIPTION:By request of the artist\, masks are required for this performance. \n“I’ve been in a long-distance relationship with music for the past several years\,” jokes songwriter Vienna Teng. “Now we’re talking about moving in together again.” \nLong-distance\, perhaps\, but long-running. In 2002\, Vienna released her debut album Waking Hour\, landing her on NPR’s Weekend Edition\, The Late Show with David Letterman\, and the top of Amazon’s music charts. Four more albums followed\, most recently Aims in 2013\, which became the first album to win four Independent Music Awards; she also composed the music for The Fourth Messenger by playwright Tanya Shaffer\, which premiered in 2013. Along with Vienna’s captivating live performances and thoughtful online presence\, her work has built a devoted following across generations as well as continents. \nStill\, other pursuits have always beckoned. A computer science major before she was a recording artist\, Vienna is a nerd at heart\, as comfortable in spreadsheets as the spotlight. She returned to academia in 2010 to study environmental sustainability\, which led to a new career working on climate change\, energy and waste issues. She also became a “bonus parent” to her partner’s two kids\, and in early 2020 welcomed a newborn addition to the family – just in time for pandemic lockdown. \nThat year was eye-opening for her. “So much of what I’d taken for granted my whole life just broke wide open\,” she says. “I learned a lot about what it means to hold two truths in your head at the same time\, as the saying goes. Things can be both dire and full of possibility. Both kindness and fierceness are so very necessary.” \nShe wondered: what if two songs\, with seemingly contradictory perspectives\, were written so they would “mash up” together into a duet? That fall – sometimes while breastfeeding – Vienna composed a pair of songs called “We’ve Got You”: one about being a beacon to your community\, the other about leaning on that community in your darkest hour. It’s some of the most intricate and impassioned songwriting she’s ever done\, and when she performed it in a live-streamed concert that December\, the audience response was electric. \nFittingly for a piece about replenishment and connection\, “We’ve Got You” marks the start of a new chapter for Vienna. “I’ve found a rabbit hole I’m excited to go down further\,” she says. Her long-distance phase with music is over; let the reunion begin. \n  \nPhoto credit: Samantha Hines
