SUMMARY:Rainbow Kitten Surprise - Love Hate Music Box Tour
DESCRIPTION:As if channeling another dimension where genres simply don’t exist\, Rainbow Kitten Surprise finds harmony in unpredictability – weaving together lyrical poetry\, hummable melodies\, and a rush of instrumental eccentricities. Now boasting over 2 billion global streams across platforms\, the band first began building their devoted fanbase with independent albums SEVEN + MARY(2013) and RKS (2015). The band’s breakout full-length debut for Elektra\, HOW TO: FRIEND\, LOVE\, FREEFALL\, arrived in April 2018. Produced by GRAMMY® Award-winner Jay Joyce (Cage The Elephant\, Lainey Wilson)\, the album featured RIAA-certified Platinum single “It’s Called: Freefall\,” earned widespread praise from Billboard\, TIME\, Vice\, and NPR who described their sound as “…a mix of jam and indie and whatever else you can throw into the soup…very earnest\, beautiful\, political\, loving rock n’ roll\,” and saw the band make several national television appearances\, including performances on “CBS Saturday Morning\,” “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert\,” and PBS’s “Austin City Limits.” After gracing the bills of Bonnaroo\, Lollapalooza\, and Osheaga\, to name a few\, RKS moved 80\,000 tickets of their own on the sold-out 2018/2019 Friend\, Love\, Freefall Tour. That tour was earmarked by a sold-out debut at Red Rocks Amphitheatre and three consecutive gigs in Athens\, GA (the latter of which were chronicled on their first official live album\, LIVE FROM ATHENS GEORGIA\, released in 2021). \nThe band released a two-track single Mary (B-Sides) in May 2019 – consisting of “Heart” and “No Vacancy.” The following year brought the release of standalone single “Our Song” – already a fan favorite in their live rotation prior to release – as well as a livestream concert in July\, held for thousands of fans on what would’ve been the date of another sold-out Red Rocks performance (cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic). In March 2022\, the band released the emotionally charged track “Work Out\,” marking their first new music in nearly two years. \n2022 also saw the band set out on their first full headline trek in nearly 3 years\, a run that included their long-awaited\, sold-out\, two-night return to Red Rocks. And in 2022 alone\, with the help of partners PLUS1 and Propeller\, Rainbow Kitten Surprise raised over $170k for food banks in local tour markets\, LGBTQ+ causes\, and mental health initiatives. \nRainbow Kitten Surprise is: Ela Melo (she/her; lead vocals)\, Darrick “Bozzy” Keller (he/him; guitar\, vocals)\, Ethan Goodpaster (he/him; lead guitar\, vocals)\, Jess Haney (he/him; drums)

SUMMARY:An evening with Vienna Teng
DESCRIPTION:“I was in a long-distance relationship with music for many years\,” jokes singer-songwriter Vienna Teng. Long-distance\, perhaps\, but long-running. In 2002\, Vienna released her debut album Waking Hour\, landing her on NPR’s Weekend Edition\, The Late Show with David Letterman\, and the top of Amazon’s music charts. Four more albums followed\, most recently Aims in 2013\, as well as the music for The Fourth Messenger by playwright Tanya Shaffer. \nTogether with Vienna’s captivating live performances and thoughtful online presence\, her work has built a devoted following across generations and continents. Still\, other pursuits have always beckoned. Vienna returned to academia in 2010 to study environmental sustainability\, which led to a new career working on climate change\, energy and waste issues. She also became a bonus parent to her partner’s two kids\, and in early 2020 welcomed a newborn addition to the family – just in time for pandemic lockdown.  \n“I learned a lot about what it means to hold two truths in your head at the same time\, as the saying goes\,” Vienna says of that period. Out of that idea emerged some of the most intricate and impassioned songwriting she’s ever done: a pair of songs called “We’ve Got You\,” about leading and leaning on one’s community. When she performs it on stage – solo\, live-looping her voice\, keyboards and percussion to layer the two songs together – the audience response is electric. \n“We’ve Got You” also marks a new chapter of merging her musical and environmental vocations. In 2022\, she launched a “music x climate action” community on Patreon\, combining monthly livestream shows with Zoom climate action sessions\, and hosting workshops between concerts that participants have described as “life-changing\,” “rocket fuel\,” and “the perfect antidote to despair.” \nThe long-distance phase is over. Now it’s time for communion – and moving forward. \n$500 Platinum- reserved seating in the best seats in the house ($455 tax-deductible) \n$250 Gold- reserved seating on floor in front of stage ($205 tax-deductible) \n$125 Silver- reserved seating in drink rail areas ($80 tax-deductible) \nPlatinum\, Gold and Silver tickets all include a dessert reception at 6:30 and a pre-show conversation between Vienna Teng and our emcee at 7:00 pm \n$50 Bronze- general admission\, show only\, doors at 7:45 pm ($25 tax deductible) \n6:30 p.m. | Doors for Platinum\, Gold\, and Silver ticket holders and dessert reception\n7:00 p.m. | Q&A with Vienna Teng and MC\n7:45 p.m. | Doors for Bronze ticket holders\n8:00 p.m. | Concert

SUMMARY:Donna The Buffalo
DESCRIPTION:Donna The Buffalo is not just a band\, rather one might say that Donna The Buffalo has become a lifestyle for its members and audiences. Since 1989\, the roots rockers have played thousands of shows and countless festivals including Bonnaroo\, Newport Folk Festival\, Telluride\, Austin City Limits Festival\, Merle Fest\, and Philadelphia Folk Festival. They’ve opened for The Dead and have toured with Peter Rowan\, Del McCoury\, Los Lobos\, Little Feat\, Jim Lauderdale\, Rusted Root\, and Railroad Earth to name a few. They also toured with Ben & Jerry’s co-founder Ben Cohen to help raise awareness about increased corporate spending in politics.   \nIn 1991\,the band started the Finger Lakes Grassroots Festival in Trumansburg\, NY. The four day festival has become an annual destination for over 15\,000 music lovers every year and was started as an AIDS benefit. It continues as a benefit for arts and education. To date\, the event has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars and is now one of three Grassroots Festivals; the Bi-annual Shakori Hills fest in North Carolina and Virginia Key festival in Florida. In 2016 GrassRoots Culture Camp was introduced in Trumansburg\, New York as four days of music\, art\, dance and movement workshops\, including nightly dinners and dances.

SUMMARY:Bob Mould solo electric
DESCRIPTION:Bob Mould is an American musician/singer/songwriter now in his fifth decade of making and performing music. Bob has released 15 solo albums since his 1989 solo debut Workbook\, after forming and leading Minnesota punk rock innovators Hüsker Dü starting in 1979. Along with two albums in the group Sugar\, Bob has redefined guitar driven rock across 23 studio albums over the last 40-plus years. \nIn addition to a catalog of over 250 songs\, Bob contributed the theme song to TV’s The Daily Show and has served as a creative north star to legions of musicians ranging from Dave Grohl to Billie Joe Armstrong. \nBob’s most recent album was 2020’s Blue Hearts\, released to continuing critical acclaim. Rolling Stone said “Blue Hearts gushes more piss and vinegar than Stanley Kubrick could fill a hallway with\, but what makes it jaw-dropping is the precision with which Mould has focused his ire on conservatives\, evangelicals\, homophobes\, while leaving room for some self-criticism as well.”  \n“The fire in Bob Mould’s belly can’t be extinguished\,” gushed Under The Radar. “Blue Hearts is Mould at his fiercest and most deliberate.”

SUMMARY:The Tannahill Weavers
DESCRIPTION:Born of a session in Paisley\, Scotland\, and named for the town’s historic weaving industry and local poet laureate Robert Tannahill\, the Tannahill Weavers have made an international name for their special brand of Celtic music\, blending the beauty of traditional melodies with the power of modern rhythms. Now in their 53rd year\, the Tannahill Weavers are one of the world’s premier traditional Celtic bands\, their diverse repertoire spans the centuries with fire-driven instrumentals\, topical songs\, original ballads and lullabies\, and humorous tales of life in Scotland. \nIn 2021 they were joined by exciting piper and fiddle player Iain MacGillivray\, who is also Scotland’s youngest Clan leader. Iain\, a fluent Gaelic speaker\, has worked on such exciting productions as Outlander and Men in Kilts\, and has performed for a huge list of stars and dignitaries in recent years. As the band celebrate the nomination of their 18th recording\, Òrach (“Golden” in Gaelic) as album of the year\, and themselves as band of the year\, they are firmly established as one of the premier groups on the concert stage. From reflective ballads to foot-stomping reels and jigs\, the variety and range of the material they perform is matched only by their enthusiasm and lively Celtic spirits.

SUMMARY:Chris Smither
DESCRIPTION:Chris Smither grew up in New Orleans where he first started playing music as a child. The son of a Tulane University professor\, he was taught the rudiments of instrumentation by his uncle on his mother’s ukulele. “I’d loved acoustic music – specifically the blues – ever since I first heard Lightnin’ Hopkins’ Blues In My Bottle album.” Chris says\, “I couldn’t believe the sound Hopkins got. At first I thought it was two guys playing guitar. My style\, to a degree\, came out of trying to imitate that sound I heard.” His music draws deeply from the blues\, American folk music\, modern poets\, and humanist philosophers. \nChris comes to The Ark in support of his 20th album\, “All About the Bones” (release date: May 3\, 2024 on Signature Sounds/Mighty Albert\, distributed by Redeye). Featuring eight brand new Chris Smither songs and Smither renditions of Eliza Gilkyson’s “Calm Before the Storm” and also Tom Petty’s “Time to Move On”\, the listener is welcomed into some gothic mansion on an imaginary New Orleans street\, and there in the lamplit parlor confronts the band\, a minimalist skeleton crew: Smither’s inimitable propulsive guitar and rumbling baritone are joined seamlessly to producer David Goodrich’s carpetbag of instruments\, Zak Trojano’s rock-steady\, primal drumming\, BettySoo’s diaphanous harmony vocals\, and the flat\, mournful flood of Jazz legend Chris Cheek’s saxophone. Recorded at Sonelab Studios in Easthampton MA by Justin Pizzoferrato “All About the Bones” has a feel that is somehow baroque and austere at once.

SUMMARY:Old Crow Medicine Show
DESCRIPTION:Acoustic Routes Concerts and The Ark are once again fighting hunger with music. \nTogether\, they are bringing Grand Ole Opry members and Grammy winners Old Crow Medicine Show to The Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor on Friday\, September 13 at 7:30 p.m. to support The Breakfast at St. Andrew’s daily meal program. \nOld Crow Medicine Show’s concerts are legendary thanks to the band’s virtuosity and breakneck tempos\, their strong original songwriting and deep respect for traditional American music. Their rise began in 2000 after a chance meeting with the flatpicking guitar and mountain music legend Doc Watson\, when the band was busking on a street corner in Boone\, North Carolina. Over the years\, their string band revival sound has found a growing legion of fans hungry for roots music and it has captured the hearts of acclaimed artists like John Prine\, Gillian Welch and Marty Stuart who helped propel their music. \nNo Depression.com says the the band is now virtually a tradition in itself and their latest Grammy-nominated album\, Jubilee\, is “a celebration of their own past and ongoing relevance\, and of old-timey music as a hoedown that never ends but might pick up a fair number of new steps along the way.” \nThe concert is the 14th that Acoustic Routes and The Ark have done together to raise money for The Breakfast at St. Andrew’s\, which feeds the homeless\, the working poor and other people struggling to make ends meet. They have never missed a day of service since opening their doors in 1982\, even during the COVID-19 pandemic.

SUMMARY:William Prince
DESCRIPTION:Guided by a practical yet profound gratitude\, William Prince’s songs convey the power of wonder and humility. A masterclass in skillful simplicity\, Prince’s songwriting is grounded in a balance between the personal and the universal\, his own moments of self-discovery and the larger questions we face together. Prince offers what’s true for himself in whatever way it is helpful. Grace is not a final state but a process. \nOver four albums\, with his newest Stand in the Joy just released\, Prince has created a body of work that traces a remarkable journey. From the giant first step taken with his award-winning debut\, Earthly Days\, which introduced Prince to the world\, through releasing two full albums in 2020 – Reliever and Gospel First Nation – in the midst of chaos and confusion\, William Prince’s discography finds its steadying\, timeless appeal in his rich voice and assured restraint.

SUMMARY:Dustbowl Revival
DESCRIPTION:Dustbowl Revival has always been about pushing the boundaries of what American roots music can be. After celebrating over a decade of sonic adventuring and playing thousands of shows together in ten countries and counting\, the group collected a devoted fanbase globally.  \nAfter spending years on the road\, selling out hometown shows at LA’s famed Troubadour\, headlining festivals and wowing crowds from Denmark to China\, Dustbowl Revival never stopped making their joyful\, booty-shaking soul songs and cut-to-heart folk-rock ballads that lift up their transcendent live shows.  \nFounder Z. Lupetin sought to find fellow musicians who shared his roving love of Louis Armstrong\, Bob Wills\, Old Crow Medicine Show\, Paul Simon\, Aretha Franklin and the brass bands of New Orleans\, but also wanted to write songs like Americana pioneers Wilco\, Lucinda Williams and even Bruce Springsteen.  \nDustbowl Revival’s collective of musicians include: Z. Lupetin (lead vocals\, guitar) Alex Nester (lead vocals)\, Chad Richard (electric guitar)\, Nick Phakpiseth (bass)\, Josh Heffernan (drums)\, Ulf Bjorlin\, Vik Devasthali (trombone)\, Max Oleary\, Mike Jones\, (trumpet).

SUMMARY:The Henhouse Prowlers
DESCRIPTION:Founded nearly two decades ago with the simple desire to play original and powerful bluegrass\, The Henhouse Prowlers now find themselves at the intersection of performance\, diplomacy and education. Onstage\, the group’s enthralling performances give audiences a sense of how much they love what they do. On record – including their latest offering\, 2023’s Lead and Iron\, released via Dark Shadow Recording – the band explores their collective life experiences through songwriting and intricate instrumentation. While bluegrass is the undeniable foundation of the Prowlers’ music\, the band bends and squeezes the traditional form into a keenly developed sound all their own. \nThe Prowlers have now been to more than 25 countries across the globe\, working with the U.S. State Department and under their own nonprofit\, Bluegrass Ambassadors\, and incorporating music from Africa\, Asia\, the Middle East & more into their already robust repertoire of unique traditional American music. \nOn stage\, in workshops and wherever they are\, the Henhouse Prowlers find and spread the commonality we share as human beings through the universal language of music.

SUMMARY:Sierra Ferrell - Shoot For The Moon Tour
DESCRIPTION:One of the brightest young luminaries in roots music today\, Sierra Ferrell brings a dose of beautifully strange magic to everything she touches. Since the arrival of Long Time Coming (her acclaimed debut LP for Rounder Records)\, the West Virginia-born singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist has earned the Emerging Act of the Year prize at the Americana Honors & Awards\, collaborated with the likes of Margo Price and Old Crow Medicine Show\, and enchanted audiences all over North America and Europe with her high-spirited and dazzling live performance. On her new album Trail Of Flowers\, the Nashville-based artist expands her sound while deepening the urgency of her songs\, often revealing a wealth of wisdom within her wildly imaginative storytelling. \nHer first full-length since Long Time Coming—a 2021 release that drew praise from outlets like Pitchfork\, Paste\, Pop Matters\, and No Depression—Trail Of Flowers came to life with producers Eddie Spear (Zach Bryan\, Brandi Carlile\, Chris Stapleton) and Gary Paczosa (Alison Krauss\, Dwight Yoakam\, Gillian Welch) and with such esteemed musicians as Chris Scruggs. In keeping with a musical upbringing that included playing everywhere from truck stops to boxcars to New Orleans street corners\, the album journeys from freewheeling bluegrass to heartrending old-time music to fantastically gritty honky-tonk and beyond\, endlessly changing shape to accommodate the immense scope of Ferrell’s eccentric musicality. Mainly recorded at Sound Emporium Studios and featuring guest appearances from singer/songwriters Lukas Nelson and Nikki Lane\, Trail Of Flowers ultimately fulfills her longstanding mission of making music that transcends all barriers of time. “I wanted to create something that makes people feel nostalgic for the past\, but excited about the future of music\,” Ferrell points out. \nInstantly proving her extraordinary capacity to merge timeless musicianship with lyrics exploring modern concerns\, Trail Of Flowers opens on “American Dreaming”: a world-weary yet soul-stirring track that speaks to the struggle to build a good life in a culture consumed by capitalism. Another song informed by her singular outlook on the modern world\, “Fox Hunt” takes the form of a furiously stomping epic driven by galloping rhythms and some feverish fiddle work from Ferrell. On “Rosemary\,” she delves further into her old-time roots and delivers the album’s most haunting moment: a stark but spellbinding story-song graced with a few bars of soulful yodeling. A profoundly gifted vocalist\, Ferrell often captures an entire world of feeling in just a single line\, particularly on tracks like “Dollar Bill Bar”—a swinging but wistful number on which she cycles from longing to regret to devil-may-care attitude with impossible ease. And on “I Could Drive You Crazy\,” Ferrell serves up one of the most joyful moments on Trail Of Flowers\, sharing a harmony-fueled and singalong-ready love song that’s both self-effacing and gloriously fun.

SUMMARY:Ann Arbor Django Reinhardt Festival
DESCRIPTION:The 2nd annual Ann Arbor Django Reinhardt Festival features host band Djangophonique and their new material with the latest addition to the ensemble\, vocalist Katie Smith\, along with other midwestern musicians who draw inspiration from the Django lineage. Christo Rupenthal’s Novelty Combo from Madison\, WI\, brings a fusion of antique Hawaiian steel guitar and hot club music\, and Erik McIntyre from Flint\, MI will be playing early American archtop guitar influenced by musicians such as Eddie Lang\, whose recordings with violinist Joe Venuti served as the blueprint for Reinhardt and Grapelli’s work. With a range of diverse offerings\, united together by enthusiasm\, skill\, and passion for the legacy surrounding the music of Django Reinhardt\, this iteration of Ann Arbor’s burgeoning new series is sure to delight\, transport\, and inspire.   \nDjangophonique is an award winning project that delivers the infectious joy\, and expressive freedom that is at the heart of Django Reinhardt’s jazz manouche. With respect for the tradition and a fearless creativity that bends the conventions of the style\, Djangophonique is keeping the Hot Club revival alive and well. The result is a sound that’s unmistakable to fans of the music\, and alluring to the uninitiated—a sound that can bring the lively energy of a Parisian dance hall to the quietest listening room or captivate a buzzing festival audience with the aching nostalgia of a shimmering ballad.   \nChristo Ruppenthal is an award-winning multi-instrumentalist and music entrepreneur whose professional career started in 2003.  He presents a unique mixture of Vaudeville-era novelty infused hot steel guitar playing from the 1920s and 30s “Hawaiian Craze” combined with the swinging sounds of Django Reinhardt’s 1930s and 40s guitar-driven Hot Club jazz. Think “Hot Hawaiian guitar meets Jazz à la Django!” Christo is an avid recording artist and performer with thousands of gigs both across the U.S. and internationally to his credit.  \nInspired by a melting pot of moods\, styles\, and spirit heard in recordings from the 1920s and 30s (by such artists as Eddie Lang\, Louis Armstrong\, Blind Blake\, Lonnie Johnson\, Billie Holiday\, Django Reinhardt\, Blind Boy Fuller\, Agustín Barrios Mangoré\, The Carter Family\, Jimmie Rodgers…)\, Erik McIntyre continues to hone a distinct musical voice that pays homage with a personal touch. His playing is spontaneous yet studious — synergizing  “muse” and “ic”. Whether as soloist or sideman\, his arrangements\, improvisations\, and compositions weave a tapestry that is filtered through a warm lens of nostalgia and invites listeners to his inner world.

SUMMARY:Crash Test Dummies
DESCRIPTION:In 2018\, 25 years after the release of their multi-Grammy nominated hit album “God Shuffled His Feet”\, The Crash Test Dummies hit the road for the first time in 20 years with an Anniversary Tour that spanned North America. The overwhelming reception led to a 30th Anniversary Tour in 2022 for their debut release “The Ghosts That Haunt Me” that touched down in the US\, UK\, Germany\, Austria\, the Netherlands\, Luxembourg\, and Canada. And the band is showing no signs of slowing down . . . \n“Touring again was not something we’d planned on\, but surprisingly – at least to me – there are lots of people who many years later\, still want to come and hear us. The folks that are coming out to see these shows tell us their stories\, some of them very funny\, some very dark and all very personal. It’s very humbling\, being in the confidence of so many people” says lead singer-songwriter Brad Roberts\, “and it has inspired us to continue to tour and make music.” \n2023 saw the release of a new\, original Crash Test Dummies single “Sacred Alphabet.”

SUMMARY:Fantastic Cat
DESCRIPTION:They said it couldn’t be done. Four different songwriters joining forces to form a single band? There was simply no precedent (outside of CSNY\, The Beatles\, The Traveling Wilburys\, The Highwaymen\, Monsters of Folk\, etc). And yet Fantastic Cat did it anyway\, defying the odds and teaming up to record their highly unanticipated 2022 debut\, The Very Best Of Fantastic Cat. Hailed by Rolling Stone as “a wildly satisfying collection of folk-rock\, country\, Americana\, and good old rock & roll” that offers “equal doses of Dylan and Springsteen\,” the album earned the vocal-trading\, instrument-swapping collective their national TV debut\, sold-out headline dates around the US and Europe\, festival performances everywhere from Sundance to Take Root\, and a song in the Showtime series Tulsa King. In 2023\, the unlikely four-piece teamed up with all-star producer Butch Walker for a 50th anniversary take on Wings’ “Band On The Run\,” which prompted even more love from Rolling Stone\, who dubbed them “the Harlem Globetrotters of Americana.”  \nIndividually\, each member of Fantastic Cat boasts their own impressive resume along with a litany of critical acclaim. Paste declared Don DiLego’s latest album a “stunner.” NPR said Anthony D’Amato “sings and writes in the tradition of Bruce Springsteen or Josh Ritter.” Rolling Stone called Brian Dunne’s new record “the sleeper album of the year” and praised Mike Montali’s band\, Hollis Brown\, as “the soundtrack for a late-night drive through the American heartland.” Collectively\, though\, the four transcend their respective roots\, emerging as velvet-clad rock and roll cooperative far greater than the sum of its parts.  \nThey say some cats are born fantastic; others have fantasy thrust upon them. These guys are somewhere in the middle. \nThe Ark’s Artist Spotlight Series is made possible with support from Ford Philanthropy. It is presented live\, and also livestreamed on The Ark’s Facebook page. \nTonight’s show is FREE (nonperishables accepted for Food Gatherers).

SUMMARY:Doolin'
DESCRIPTION:After three years of breakout touring at some of the biggest roots festivals in the United States and Canada\, and another three years locked out of the live performance world they have so ambitiously cultivated\, Doolin’\, France’s premiere practitioners of Irish and Celtic music\, return in early 2023 with a new album entitled CIRCUS BOY.  \nRecorded in part in the US (Chicago\, Kansas City and Pittsburgh) during their 2019 tour\, the album was completed at the legendary Studio Ferber in Paris\, France\, under the direction of two legendary producers\, Olivier Lude and Patrice Renson\, both of whom have collaborated with some of the biggest names in French music. While their 2016 album drew its inspiration from the fusion of traditional Irish music\, French chanson\, and American roots music\, CIRCUS BOY is resolutely more adventurous\, as evidenced by their original compositions as well as by the added punch and sonic elements that were brought to the project by producers Lude and Renson.   \nWilfried Besse’s vocals are supported as usual by the driving rhythm section of Josselin Fournel (percussion)\, Sébastien Saunié (bass) and Nicolas Besse (guitars)\, and the trad-Irish influence remains evidenced through the whistles of Jacob Fournel\, the bodhran of his brother\, Josselin\, and the nimble accordion playing of Nicolas’ brother\, Wilfried. But CIRCUS BOY represents a more powerful and bigger musical vision for the band\, made possible by the introduction of piano\, drums\, and brass as new sonic elements. That said\, the Irish music tradition is not complete without the presence of a fiddle or two\, and on CIRCUS BOY Doolin’ includes three of the best European fiddlers of the genre: Niahm Gallagher\, Niall Murphy\, and Guilhem Cavaillé\, himself a founding member of the band.

SUMMARY:Graham Nash
DESCRIPTION:Legendary artist Graham Nash is a two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee – with Crosby\, Stills\, and Nash and with the Hollies. He was also inducted twice into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame\, as a solo artist and with CSN\, and he is a GRAMMY Award winner. \nTowering above virtually everything that Graham Nash has accomplished in his long and multi-faceted career\, stands the litany of songs that he has written and introduced to the soundtrack of the past half-century. His remarkable body of work\, beginning with his contributions to the Hollies opus from 1964 to ’68\, including “Stop Stop Stop\,” “Pay You Back With Interest\,” “On A Carousel\,” “Carrie Anne\,” “King Midas In Reverse\,” and “Jennifer Eccles\,” continues all the way to his most recent album\, “Now\,” released in 2023. \nThe original classic union of Crosby\, Stills & Nash (& Young) lasted but twenty months.  Yet their songs are lightning rods embedded in our DNA\, starting with Nash’s “Marrakesh Express\,” “Pre-Road Downs” (written for then-girlfriend Joni Mitchell)\, and “Lady Of the Island\,” from the first Crosby\, Stills & Nash LP (1969).  On CSNY’s Déjà Vu (1970)\, Nash’s “Teach Your Children” and “Our House” beseeched us to hold love tightly\, to fend off the madness that was on its way. \nOverlapping CSNY\, Nash’s solo career debuted with Songs For Beginners (1971)\, whose “Chicago/We Can Change the World” and “Military Madness” were fueled by the Long Hot Summer\, the trial of the Chicago Eight\, and the ongoing Vietnam war.  Songs from that LP stayed in Nash’s concert sets for years including “I Used To Be A King” and “Simple Man”.  His next album\, Wild Tales (1974)\, addressed (among other issues) unfair jail terms for minor drug offenses (“Prison Song”)\, unfair treatment of Vietnam vets (“Oh! Camil”)\, the unfairness of fame (“You’ll Never Be the Same”)\, and his muse\, Joni (“Another Sleep Song”). \nThe most resilient\, long-lived and productive partnership to emerge from the CSNY camp launched with the eponymously titled Graham Nash/David Crosby (1972)\, bookended by Nash’s “Southbound Train” as the opening track and “Immigration Man” as the closer.  The duo contributed further to the soundtrack of the ’70s on their back-to-back albums\, Wind On the Water (1975) and Whistling Down the Wire (1976). \nOn the CSN reunion studio LP (1977)\, Nash took top honors with “Just A Song Before I Go” (written in the space of one hour\, and a Top 10 hit single).  Lightning struck once more on CSN’s Daylight Again (1982)\, on which Nash penned their second (and final) Top 10 hit\, “Wasted On the Way\,” lamenting the energy\, time and love lost by the group due to years of internecine quarrels. \nNash’s passionate voice continues to be heard in support of peace\, and social and environmental justice. The No Nukes/Musicians United for Safe Energy (MUSE) concerts he organized with Jackson Browne and Bonnie Raitt in 1979 remain seminal benefit events.  In 2011\, Nash was instrumental in bringing MUSE back to the forefront with a concert to benefit Japan disaster relief and groups promoting non-nuclear energy worldwide. That same year\, he and Crosby were among the many musicians who made their way to the Occupy Wall Street actions in lower Manhattan. \nIn September 2013\, Nash released his long-awaited autobiography Wild Tales\, which delivers an engrossing\, no-holds-barred look back at his remarkable career and the music that defined a generation. The book landed him on the New York Times Best Sellers list\, and was released in paperback in late 2014. \nIn recognition for his contributions as a musician and philanthropist\, Nash was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by Queen Elizabeth. While continually building his musical legacy\, Nash is also an internationally renowned photographer and visual artist. With his photography\, Nash has drawn honors including the New York Institute of Technology’s Arts & Technology Medal and Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters and the Hollywood Film Festival’s inaugural Hollywood Visionary Cyber Award.  His work is collected in the book Eye to Eye: Photographs by Graham Nash; he curated others’ work in the volume Taking Aim: Unforgettable Rock ‘n’ Roll Photographs Selected by Graham Nash (2009). \nNash’s work has been shown in galleries and museums worldwide. His company Nash Editions’ original IRIS 3047 digital printer and one of its first published works—Nash’s 1969 portrait of David Crosby— is now housed in the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian Institution in recognition of his revolutionary accomplishments in the fine arts and digital printing world.
