SUMMARY:The RFD Boys
DESCRIPTION:It’s hard to believe\, because each show is fresh and new\, but the RFD Boys have been delighting Michigan audiences since 1969 with their fabulous musicianship and sly\, exquisitely timed between-song humor. They’re legends of Michigan bluegrass\, but they’re more than that too. With an appearance on the cover of Bluegrass Unlimited\, with songs recorded by the likes of the Country Gentlemen\, and with performances alongside bluegrass greats like Bill Monroe and Ralph Stanley\, the RFD Boys are a part of America’s bluegrass tradition. The RFD Boys are one of southeastern Michigan’s most durable musical ensembles\, and their shows capture a deep slice of musical Ann Arbor. Their 50th-anniversary appearance at the Folk Festival was a special moment and introduced many listeners to Dan Roehrig\, who joined the band on guitar\, mandolin\, and bass in mid-2018. Dan grew up listening to Doc Watson\, Clarence White\, and Tony Rice\, and you can hear it in both his singing and guitar playing.

DESCRIPTION:Andrew Bird is an internationally acclaimed\, Grammy-nominated multi-instrumentalist\, vocalist\, whistler\, and songwriter who picked up his first violin at the age of four and spent his formative years soaking up classical repertoire completely by ear. Since beginning his recording career in 1997\, Bird has released 17 albums and performed extensively across the globe. He has recorded with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band\, appeared as “Dr. Stringz” on Jack’s Big Music Show\, and headlined concerts at Carnegie Hall\, Sydney Opera House\, Walt Disney Concert Hall\, Red Rocks Amphitheatre\, and festivals worldwide.\n\nBird performed as the Whistling Caruso in Disney’s The Muppets movie\, scored the FX series Baskets\, and collaborated with inventor Ian Schneller on Sonic Arboretum\, an installation that exhibited at New York’s Guggenheim Museum\, Boston’s ICA\, and the MCA Chicago. Bird has been a featured TED Talks presenter\, a New Yorker Festival guest\, and an op-ed contributor for the New York Times.\n\nMore recently\, Bird released a series of site-specific improvisational short films and recordings called Echolocations\, recorded in remote and acoustically interesting spaces: a Utah canyon\, an abandoned seaside bunker\, the middle of the Los Angeles River\, and a reverberant stone-covered aqueduct in Lisbon. DESCRIPTION:For more than 15 years\, Brad Phillips has performed as a sideman for some of Michigan’s most prevalent singer/songwriter acts. From Jeff Daniels to The Verve Pipe to the Celtic-fusion super-group Millish. He has also appeared with May Erlewine\, Joshua Davis and played violin for Stevie Wonder\, Aretha Franklin\, Pat Metheny\, and Iggy Pop and the Stooges. Brad earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in music from the University of Michigan School of Music\, Theatre & Dance\, where he is now faculty as a lecturer in the department of Jazz & Contemporary Improvisation. He is also a resident artist at the Purple Rose Theatre Company\, where he has worked as a composer\, sound designer\, and actor. \nJoining Brad on The Ark stage is his daughter\, Alyson Phillips. Having been surrounded by music since birth\, she has been singing with her dad since she was able to speak. Alyson is particularly inspired by the music of Nat King Cole\, Frank Sinatra\, Sam Cooke\, Stevie Wonder\, Michael Jackson\, Ella Fitzgerald\, Billie Holiday\, Fleetwood Mac\, and a highly eclectic mix of contemporary music. In addition to singing\, Alyson is a filmmaker\, director\, writer\, actor and had her work screened at the largest student film festival in the world in New York City as part of the Downriver Detroit Student Film Consortium. Inspired early in life by Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds\, Alyson is also a competitive dancer in modern styles\, ballet and tap.

DESCRIPTION:Peter Yarrow co-wrote “Puff\, the Magic Dragon\,” and by any measure he’s one of America’s most beloved folk singers. With Peter\, Paul & Mary in the 1960s and beyond\, he was part of a group that changed the world of music. He’s been active in changing the wider world as well\, and he has never slowed down since the birth of Peter\, Paul & Mary during the Kennedy administration. In 1969 he was one of the organizers of the antiwar March on Washington. In support of the rights of Jews in the former Soviet Union he wrote the anthem “Don’t Let the Light Go Out.” In 2000 he founded Operation Respect\, a set of school and camp curricula designed to promote a culture of tolerance and respect. Peter’s recent appearances have emphasized music as a shared message and an antidote to mean-spiritedness and intolerance.

SUMMARY:The RFD Boys
DESCRIPTION:It’s hard to believe\, because each show is fresh and new\, but the RFD Boys have been delighting Michigan audiences since 1969 with their fabulous musicianship and sly\, exquisitely timed between-song humor. They’re legends of Michigan bluegrass\, but they’re more than that too. With an appearance on the cover of Bluegrass Unlimited\, with songs recorded by the likes of the Country Gentlemen\, and with performances alongside bluegrass greats like Bill Monroe and Ralph Stanley\, the RFD Boys are a part of America’s bluegrass tradition. The RFD Boys are one of southeastern Michigan’s most durable musical ensembles\, and their shows capture a deep slice of musical Ann Arbor. Their 50th-anniversary appearance at the Folk Festival was a special moment and introduced many listeners to Dan Roehrig\, who joined the band on guitar\, mandolin\, and bass in mid-2018. Dan grew up listening to Doc Watson\, Clarence White\, and Tony Rice\, and you can hear it in both his singing and guitar playing.

DESCRIPTION:Due to unforeseen circumstances\, this show has been cancelled. Tickets have been refunded through the original point of purchase. \nThe name ‘Johnny A.’ might not be so mainstream\, but there’s no doubt that it’s synonymous with guitar. His passion began at the age of thirteen\, when he first saw the Beatles in Boston\, followed two years later by an in-person witnessing of Jimi Hendrix. From there\, he was hooked\, getting a cheap beginner guitar to try and play along with his early heroes — which also included Yardbirds icons Eric Clapton\, Jeff Beck\, and Jimmy Page. Soon enough\, Johnny A. got it.\n\nBy the 1970’s\, he was forming bands in the New England area\, drawing attention from several established musicians\, like Derek and the Dominos’ keyboardist Bobby Whitlock and Doug Clifford of Creedence Clearwater Revival. Johnny A. became Music Director of J. Geils Band singer Peter Wolf’s outfit\, coordinating the onstage arrangements\, playing on several tours and co-producing Wolf’s 1996 album\, *Long Line.* What’s more\, he was even asked to join The Yardbirds as their lead guitarist in 2015.\n\nAll this is to say that Johnny A. has the chops\, and that’s not to mention his prolific solo career. Spanning three full-length albums\, Johnny A. has earned a Grammy Award nomination\, the honor of Boston Music Awards\, “Blues Artist of the Year 2010\,” and a spot in the revered Boston Music Hall of Fame. Ever the restless spirit\, Johnny A. continues to glide across genres effortlessly\, exploring elements of jazz\, soul. He still fervently carries on the tradition of the legends he respected as a teen.

SUMMARY:Bandits on the Run
DESCRIPTION:Bandits on the Run is the musical trio of Adrian Enscoe\, Sydney Shepherd\, and Regina Strayhorn. Formed upon a chance encounter while busking in the subways of New York City\, the Brooklyn based outfit has gone on to receive accolades from NPR Music’s All Songs Considered\, American Songwriter\, NPR Weekend Edition\, and the Johnny Mercer Songwriters Project. 2020 found them busy writing and recording their EP “Now Is The Time” with producer Ryan Hadlock (Brandi Carlile\, The Lumineers) and producing a short musical film “Band At The End Of The World” commissioned by NYC based Prospect Theater Company. 2022 saw them composing music for the Netflix children’s animated series “Storybots” and scoring the movie “The Same Storm”. They have been touring the globe with appearances at the Cambridge Folk Festival\, Floydfest\, Milwaukee Summerfest\, Americanafest\, the Folk Alliance and the F1 Singapore Grand Prix. Their next release will be their most collaborative yet: a self-produced EP featuring various and sundry bandit friends that explores the tensions of a world that has been broken open but is putting itself back together. \nYou may know John Gallagher Jr. as a screen and stage actor\, having won a Tony for his performance in the Broadway musical Spring Awakening (feat. the music of Duncan Sheik)\, and gone on to star in the musicals American Idiot (Green Day) and Swept Away (The Avett Brothers). But when it comes to his own music\, that’s a bit more personal. His songs take you from suburban nights in Delaware\, family trips to the Jersey Shore\, bars across Manhattan\, and all the friends and lovers in between.

The singer-songwriter rose to stardom on the country charts of the 1990s with such mega hits as Your Love Amazes Me\, Standing on the Edge of Goodbye and She’s Taken a Shine. During his star-making decade\, John placed 20 singles on the country charts\, 6 of which went Top 5. John was nominated for the ACM Top New Male Vocalist in 1994\, won a Grammy Award in 1996 for his participation in Amazing Grace: A Country Salute to Gospel Vol. 1\, and was nominated for the CMA Horizon Award and Top Male Vocalist Award in 1995.\n\nJohn’s enduringly powerful performances draw on a lifetime of making music and living life. Born in South Carolina and raised in Georgia\, he began playing guitar at 13\, performing shows at age 14 and making records at age 19. “By the time I was 17\, I knew that music was what I wanted to do with my life”; and he has done it well ever since. Ukes? Well\, it’s more like 30 different instruments. Plasticity? Yes! The Brain Plasticity Ukulele Collective believes that by sharing music and learning how to play a new instrument\, you can: “Drop a brain bomb. Fire up the synapses. Rewire some neural pathways.” And BLUESHOUSE!\, led by veteran English bluesman Mike Brooks\, has enlivened countless stages and street parties around southeast Michigan over the last decade. Join us for a combination that will stretch your brain! \nMike Brooks\, veteran blues guitar player/singer/songwriter from the UK has been playing guitar since the age of 10\, and professionally since the age of 16. His musical career and accolades are many and varied\, but include hitting the UK charts in 1979 (#28 on “the New Wave of British Heavy Metal” despite being a blues band)\, getting a cease and desist order from Walt Disney Corp for using a band name too close to that of a cartoon mouse\, opening for bands such as the Yardbirds\, the Animals\, Wishbone Ash and Nine Below Zero\, and playing in some of the most famous venues anywhere such as London’s Marquee\, and\, well\, The Ark! In addition to leading BLUESHOUSE and fronting the Brain Plasticity Ukulele Collective\, he also works with Ann Arbor’s youth at the Neutral Zone\, a continuation of a youth music project begun in the UK called Electric896\, which taught disengaged youth how to rock the blues.

Stop by and join one of our favorite street parties of the year! \n6:00 Phillip-Michael Scales \nAs a kid\, Phillip-Michael Scales didn’t understand what it meant that his aunt’s close friend\, the guitar player who called him “Nephew” and he called “Uncle B\,” was B.B. King. Once Phillip-Michael began guitar lessons\, the significance became so clear that he shied away from soloing and most things blues. Instead\, he fell in love with songwriting when an English teacher told him “A great writer can make their reader identify with anyone.” When his Uncle B passed away\, Scales began incorporating more of the blues into his music as a way to honor him. “These days I’m finding more of my story in the blues. A lot has led me here between politics\, my identity\, and the idea of Legacy.” The result is a sound he calls “Dive Bar Soul” which takes a bit of indie rock storytelling and couples it with the passion of the blues. \n7:30 Joe and The Ruckus \nThe Ruckus is a collective with the goal of recontextualizing classic funk and soul music within our 21st century world. They formed during the pandemic and emerged from lock-down as changed people in search of new live music experiences from those typically seen pre-pandemic. The Ruckus rose to and surpassed that expectation\, providing electrifying live concerts with repertoire ranging from the father of funk\, James Brown\, to the king of soul\, Stevie Wonder\, and beyond into more modern artists and have now expanded from their hometown to NYC\, Chicago and Detroit.  \n

DESCRIPTION:White Flowers is a string ensemble that came out of Autophysiopsychic Millennium’s theatrical performance Something Else in the Garden\, based on Dr. Yusef Lateef’s novella\, Night in the Garden of Love.  \nAutophysiopsychic Millennium (APPM) is a Black-led creative research and performance collective that explores\, experiment\, and studies the music philosophy and spiritual works of world-renowned multi-instrumentalist musician\, composer\, author\, visual artist\, professor\, Afro-Futurist\, and Detroit native\, Dr. Yusef Lateef.  \nWhite Flowers integrates musical compositions based on environmental themes and climate consciousness to initiate a cultural discourse around climate change and the importance of addressing it before it’s irreversible. These are themes discussed in Dr. Lateef’s Night in the Garden of Love\, which is set on a dying Earth due to human destruction and corruption. These compositions will engage deep human emotions to connect with climate change issues through a social\, political\, and cultural lens. They will serve as a platform to highlight the gravity of the climate emergency. \nThe lineup of musicians is:  \nLuFuki King Sophia\nAaron Jonah Lewis\nIndira Edwards\nLaina Martin\nAnJelic\nMichael Smith \nVoices is a series of artist-cultivated concerts at The Ark conceived and created by Ann Arbor musician Kyler Wilkins\, AKA vocal looping artist Ki5. The series seeks to expand the representation of Michigan BIPOC artists and audiences at The Ark. Each show\, intentional time will be taken to get to know each artist in the form of brief interviews and musical breaks to have them speak about their journey as musicians and performers with the hope that people in the audience are more connected to and inspired by those voices.

On July 11th\, he will be performing and publishing his second compilation called “Dreaming on Paris” accompanied by drums\, keys\, bass\, & background vocals.
